Day 14. The rain storm clouds overhead match the asphalt
I’m driving on—the sky and blacktop are a faded industrial gray,
the color of matte stainless steel appliances, vintage pewter,
cold wood ashes, and the rock salt used on the roads to melt the
snow. Benjamin Moore gave the moody color medieval gray-tone names:
“perspective, sea salt, old soul, chateau, gothic arch, city
shadow, wool peacoat, and coachman’s cape.” In total, twenty
nine shades of gray, a list from light to dark.
