Landscape Memories

Day 13. On KoKo – Maturity. January thaw in western New York. Gray sky, muted browns the color of mouse fur, temperature hovers in the low 60 degrees F,  not record breaking, but a future whisper of spring. The open spaces in my yard are a series of scattered large puddles that reflect the shaggy, peeling bark of the river birch and white-pine needled trees. The water logged soil holds the landscape’s memories: vernal pools,  wetlands, and orchard  irrigation ditches.
